CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Ray closed Jules’s eyes and stood over her corpse. He’d retrieved his shoe from the floor; his big toe protruded from a hole made by the creature’s teeth. He wanted to say some words for Jules, but he was incapable.

A low hissing rose from behind him. He pivoted and aimed the torch at the empty window, where two creatures clamoured and scratched at each other to gain entry to the room. They looked at him, snarling, mouths dripping with dark fluid.

Ray backed out of the room and closed the door just as they tumbled through the window and fell upon Jules’s body.

The sound of claws ripping clothes and meat followed.

He fled downstairs as the creatures yipped and brayed in delight, and found Shell and Edwin with their backs to the desk against the front door. The creatures had managed to open the door, and the jamb was splintered to kindling. The desk was the only thing holding the door shut.

Shell and Edwin looked up at Ray, their faces strained with exertion and distress. There was a question in Shell’s eyes.

“Jules is gone,” Ray said.

“Molly?” asked Shell.

Ray shook his head.

Shell’s face tightened and her mouth trembled. But she said nothing.

The desk edged away from the door, scraping on the hallway floor as the creatures pushed to gain entry. Edwin cried out as he dug his heels in and pushed against the desk. Tears swelled in Shell’s eyes.

Ray hurried from the foot of the stairway and shoulder-barged the desk, as pale fingers emerged and swiped at the air. The fingers were crushed against the broken jamb as Ray, Shell and Edwin heaved the desk back against the door. The agonised squeal from outside hurt Ray’s ears. He looked up to see the fingers disappear. Outside, the creatures slashed and crashed at the door.

Clawed feet scratched on the floors upstairs. They had finished with Jules. More would enter through the broken window.

“We have to go,” said Ray.

Edwin’s feet slipped on the floor as the creatures nudged the desk pushed forward again. “Go where?”

“Anywhere but here.”

“Ray’s right,” Shell said.

“Make a break for it?” There was a tremor of hysteria in Edwin’s voice. His eyes were manic.

“We can’t fight them off,” said Ray.

“I doubt we can outrun them either.”

Ray glanced at him, pushed his shoulder to keep the desk in place. His strength was fading and the desk was slowly moving away from the door. “Stay here if you want.”

The man grimaced and looked at Ray. His face was beaded with sweat; a drop fell from the end of his nose. “Fuck it, then. Let’s go.”

“You both go to the back door and move the barricade,” Ray said. “I’ll hold the desk here until you’re done. Okay?”

Edwin breathed through clenched teeth. “Okay.”

Shell nodded. “Okay.”

Ray looked at his wife. “Run straight for the trees. Go.”

They went, traipsing down the hallway to the back door. As soon as they left him, the door began to open wider and the desk pushed Ray back. A frenzy of hands and limbs appeared from the gap in the doorway.
